About the exhibition

Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black is Nemanja Jehlicka’s first solo exhibition. The exhibition showcases a number of works documenting the work-in-progress nature of any project.

The idea was to give a physical embodiment to the different
stages of creative thinking and execution, ranging from midway-through-process graphic ruminations to ideas rejected by clients, which are oftentimes more interesting than the final output / approved solution.

The exhibition represents an homage to these lost processes, reviewed and rearranged for the purpose of this exhibition. Twelve works presented in the exhibition are varying in sizes and formats produced in different mediums ranging from prints, flags, cutout foils, a neon sign and murals.

On the other hand, the exhibition also represents Nemanja’s obsessive-compulsive research in the fields of graphic symbols, typography and patterns.

The typographic Pangram is the only element in the exhibition that was produced for the client. It is made out of various type designs Nemanja did in the course of several years.

The title Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black was taken from the book written by American underground actress and muse Cookie Mueller.

Big thanks to Vladimir Stevanovic and his help in 3D, without which some of the artwork wouldn’t be made possible.
